Monocyte Blood Test

A monocyte blood test is a laboratory test that measures the number and percentage of monocytes in the blood. Monocytes are a type of white blood cell that play a role in the immune system’s response to infection and inflammation.

During the test, a small sample of blood is taken from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The normal range for monocyte levels is typically between 2% and 8% of the total white blood cell count.

Higher levels of monocytes may indicate the presence of an infection, inflammation, autoimmune disorders, or other medical conditions. Monocytes can also be elevated in response to certain medications or after surgery.

A healthcare provider may order a monocyte blood test as part of a comprehensive evaluation for a variety of medical conditions. The test can help diagnose and monitor conditions such as bacterial or viral infections, tuberculosis, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain types of cancer.

It is important to note that the monocyte blood test is not specific to any one medical condition, and higher levels of monocytes may be seen in a variety of conditions. A healthcare provider can interpret the results of the test in the context of the individual’s medical history and other test results, and develop an appropriate treatment plan if necessary.
