SGOT Blood Test

SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase) blood test, also known as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) test, is a laboratory test that measures the level of SGOT or AST in the blood. SGOT/AST is an enzyme that is found in many tissues in the body, including the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys.

The SGOT/AST blood test is commonly used to evaluate liver function, particularly in people who may have liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver damage caused by alcohol or medications. It can also be used to monitor the progression of liver disease and the effectiveness of treatment.

During the test, a small sample of blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The normal range for SGOT/AST levels varies depending on the laboratory that performs the test, but generally ranges from 10 to 40 units per liter (U/L).

Elevated SGOT/AST levels can indicate liver damage or disease, but they can also be caused by other factors, such as recent alcohol consumption, muscle damage, and certain medications. Therefore, further testing and evaluation may be necessary to determine the underlying cause of elevated SGOT/AST levels.

A healthcare provider can interpret the results of the SGOT/AST blood test in the context of the individual’s medical history and other test results, and develop an appropriate treatment plan if necessary.
