T-bil Blood Test

The T-bil blood test, also known as total bilirubin blood test, is a laboratory test that measures the level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish substance that is produced during the breakdown of red blood cells in the liver and is excreted in the bile.

The T-bil blood test is commonly used to evaluate liver function and to diagnose and monitor liver diseases, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and jaundice. It can also be used to evaluate other conditions, such as anemia, gallbladder disease, and certain types of cancer.

During the test, a small sample of blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The normal range for T-bil levels varies depending on the laboratory that performs the test, but generally ranges from 0.2 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Elevated T-bil levels can indicate liver disease or dysfunction, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, or other conditions, such as hemolytic anemia, gallbladder disease, or certain types of cancer. Low T-bil levels are rare, but can indicate a problem with the liver or a genetic disorder that affects bilirubin production.

A healthcare provider can interpret the results of the T-bil blood test in the context of the individual’s medical history and other test results, and develop an appropriate treatment plan if necessary.
