What the work actually looks like

A Speedy Sticks mobile phlebotomist works from their car, not an office. You claim appointments through the app in the morning, then spend the day driving to patients — residential homes, senior living communities, employer wellness sites, and occasionally care facilities. Most phlebotomists complete between two and eight visits per day depending on how much availability they set.

At each visit you arrive within the confirmed time window, introduce yourself, and verify the patient's identity using two identifiers per clinical protocol. You review the order or draw kit requirements, select the correct tubes, and perform the draw — venipuncture, capillary stick, or urine collection depending on the order. Most visits take 15 to 30 minutes including setup, the draw itself, and documentation.

Immediately after collection you label every specimen at the patient's side — never in the car afterward — and complete the chain-of-custody submission in the app before leaving. Specimens go into a biohazard transport bag and cooler if cold-chain is required. You either hand off to a courier arranged through the platform or drop specimens at the designated reference lab — Quest, Labcorp, or a specialty lab — depending on the appointment instructions.

The draw types you will encounter regularly: routine venipuncture panels (CBC, CMP, lipid, thyroid), anticoagulation monitoring draws (INR/PT), pediatric capillary sticks, urine specimen collection, and draw-kit collections for specialty labs. You are often the patient's only in-person clinical contact for that visit — good communication matters as much as technique.

    Pay and contractor structure

All Speedy Sticks phlebotomists work as independent contractors (1099). Each appointment in the app shows its rate before you claim it — there are no hidden splits or deductions revealed after the fact. Rates vary by visit type, distance from your location, draw complexity, and same-day scheduling factors. Routine single-patient home visits, multi-patient employer screens, and specialty kit draws are priced differently.

Payment is issued on a regular cycle through the platform. Because this is a 1099 arrangement, you are responsible for self-employment taxes and quarterly estimated payments. Speedy Sticks issues a 1099-NEC at year end. There is no health insurance, paid time off, or employer-sponsored retirement — the tradeoff is complete schedule autonomy with no minimum visit requirements or mandatory availability windows.

    Frequently asked questions

Real questions from phlebotomists who have gone through the process.

Is this a W-2 position or 1099 independent contractor?
All Speedy Sticks phlebotomist roles are independent contractor (1099) positions. You operate as your own business, set your own availability, and claim the visits you want. There is no guaranteed minimum hours or mandatory schedule — you work as much or as little as you choose.
    How does pay work?
Pay is structured on a per-visit basis. Each appointment in the app shows the rate before you claim it, so you know what you will earn before committing. Compensation varies by visit type, distance, and draw complexity. Payment is issued on a regular schedule through the platform. Because you are an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own taxes, and Speedy Sticks issues a 1099 at year end.
Do I need to supply my own phlebotomy equipment?
You are responsible for your standard phlebotomy kit: needles, tourniquets, gauze, alcohol prep pads, bandages, biohazard transport bags, and a cooler with ice packs for temperature-sensitive specimens. For each appointment, Speedy Sticks provides anything order-specific — test kits mailed from specialty labs, requisition documentation, chain-of-custody paperwork, and courier labels when applicable. The app tells you exactly what supplies to bring and what will be provided before you claim a visit.
    What certifications do I need?
You need a valid phlebotomy certification for the state or states in which you intend to practice. Accepted credentials include CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) from NHA, PBT from ASCP, and equivalent certifications from AMT. Some states have specific licensure requirements beyond national certification — the app will flag what is needed for your market during registration. At least one year of active field experience is required; new graduates are not currently accepted.
Can I work across multiple states?
Yes, if you hold valid credentials in each state. You set your service area in the app, and appointments are surfaced based on that geography. If you travel or want to expand into an adjacent market, you can update your service area at any time — subject to meeting the certification requirements for that state.
Is there a minimum number of visits I have to take?
No. There is no minimum commitment. You set your availability windows in the app and browse open appointments that fit. Some phlebotomists work full-time volume; others pick up a handful of visits per week to supplement other clinical work. The platform accommodates both.
What happens if a draw is unsuccessful or a patient is difficult?
Unsuccessful draws happen in any clinical setting. The protocol is straightforward: document the attempt in the app, follow the two-stick policy (maximum two attempts per visit unless the patient explicitly consents to more), and contact Speedy Sticks support if you need guidance or a follow-up visit needs to be rescheduled. You will not be penalized for a single unsuccessful draw when proper technique was followed and documented.
How long does the credentialing review take?
Most applications are reviewed within three to seven business days of submitting complete documentation — certification, government ID, and background check consent. The credentialing team contacts you directly if anything is missing. Once approved, your profile is activated and you can immediately browse appointments in your area.
