Overview

About this kit

Genova Diagnostics is a specialty lab that ships collection packs to providers and patients. Tests are activated at gdx.net/activate. [G1]

A lactulose and mannitol urine challenge test. [G1]

The process

Step by step

  1. 1

    Before the visit

    Prep

    • High urine glucose interferes. If you have glucosuria or uncontrolled diabetes, or take medicines that raise urine glucose, ask your doctor first. Lactulose should be used with caution in diabetics. [G1]
    • Not recommended on a galactose or lactose restricted diet, or with allergy to lactulose or sugar alcohols. [G1]
    • 3 days before, unless your physician says otherwise, stop aspirin and NSAIDs, laxatives, aluminum or magnesium hydroxide antacids, and drugs containing sorbitol or mannitol. [G1]
    • Nothing to eat or drink for at least 8 hours before. Stop non-essential supplements and medications unless told otherwise. [G1]
    • Abnormal kidney function or diuretics may affect results. Don't collect if there is blood in the urine, including menstrual blood. [G1]
  2. 2

    Collection

    Collect

    • Write your date of birth and the collection date on the labels and attach them to the tubes. [G1]
    • Collect your first morning urine in a clean container (a large plastic cup works well). If you urinate during the night within 6 hours of your usual wake time, collect it too, refrigerate it, and combine it with the morning urine. [G1]
    • Pipette urine into the white-top tube until nearly full, recap, shake, and refrigerate. [G1]
    • Right away, mix the drink with water to the fill line, shake, and drink it all. Note the start time and the end time 6 hours later. [G1]
    • No food or drink for 2 hours, then at least 1 cup of water every hour. After 2 hours you may eat but avoid fructose, lactose, mannitol and other sugar alcohols. [G1]
    • Collect every urination for 6 hours into the refrigerated jug. [G1]
    • Measure the total volume with the jug's mL marks and enter it at gdx.net/activate. [G1]
    • Invert the jug 30 seconds, then pipette into the purple-top tube until nearly full, and recap. [G1]
  3. 3

    Right after collection

    Processing

    • Refrigerate both tubes in the biohazard bag. Freeze the gel pack at least 4 hours before shipping. [G1]
    • Return within 24 hours of collection. [G1]
