About this kit

The process
Step by step

Before the visit
Prep
- Ask your provider about stopping medications and supplements 4 days before. [G1]
- Freeze the freezer brick at least 8 hours. [G1]
- For the 24 hours before, eat your usual diet but avoid overeating any single food or an extreme diet. [G1]
- Drink no more than six 8-ounce glasses of fluid in the 24 hours before collection. [G1]
- Fast overnight. Water is okay. Valproic acid, acetaminophen and berberine HCl interfere with some results. [G1]
- If a cheek swab is ordered: brushing and flossing are okay the night before, but no mouthwash. On the morning, don't eat, brush, floss, use mouthwash, chew gum, or use tobacco or coffee before swabbing on waking. [G1]
- Abnormal kidney function or diuretics may affect results. Don't collect if there is blood in the urine, including menstrual blood. [G1]

Collection
Collect
- Write your date of birth and the collection date on the labels and attach them to the tubes. [G1]
- Collect your first morning urine in a clean container (a large plastic cup works well). If you urinate during the night within 6 hours of your usual wake time, collect it too, refrigerate it, and combine it with the morning urine. [G1]
- Stir and pipette urine into all four tubes until nearly full. Recap and shake. [G1]
- Cheek swab (if ordered): scrape the inside of the cheek firmly with one cotton swab for at least 30 seconds, rotating it and avoiding excess saliva. Repeat with the second swab, air dry 15 to 20 minutes, and seal them in the paper envelope. [G1]
- Bloodspot (if ordered): follow the card instructions in your kit. [G1]

Processing
- Freeze the urine tubes in the biohazard bag for at least 24 hours. Let the bloodspot card dry at least 24 hours. [G1]

Get it to the lab
Shipping
- Put the frozen freezer brick and the biohazard bag with frozen tubes in the insulated pack or foam insulator, then in the box. [G1]
- Enter the collection date at gdx.net/activate (or gdx.net/mygdx) to get a confirmation code. Write it and the date on the activation card and put the card in the box. [G1]
- Close the box, place it in the FedEx bag, and ship Monday to Friday, avoiding US holidays. [G1]
