A standard lipid panel measures four values: total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides. LDL transports cholesterol into arterial walls and is the primary driver of atherosclerotic plaque formation, making it the main therapeutic target in cardiovascular risk reduction. HDL facilitates reverse cholesterol transport from tissues back to the liver for clearance. Triglycerides reflect dietary fat, carbohydrate intake, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome risk. Non-HDL cholesterol captures all atherogenic particles and outperforms calculated LDL-C in certain populations.
