👥

What travel titers measure and who needs them

A serology titer measures the concentration of antibodies to a specific pathogen in your blood, confirming whether a prior vaccination produced an immune response sufficient to protect against infection. Not everyone who receives a vaccination achieves protective immunity: hepatitis B non-response occurs in 10 to 15 percent of healthy adults after a complete three-dose series, and that percentage rises with age, obesity, immunosuppression, and renal disease. Pre-travel titers identify these non-responders so they can receive booster doses before travel to endemic regions, not after an exposure has already occurred. Your travel medicine clinician specifies which titers are needed, what protective thresholds apply, and the timing of draws relative to vaccination and travel departure.

✦

Hepatitis A and B titers for international travelers

Hepatitis A titer confirms immunity from prior vaccination or natural infection before travel to regions with elevated transmission risk. A positive anti-HAV IgG result at protective levels confirms no booster is needed before travel. Anti-HBs confirms vaccine-induced immunity to hepatitis B; levels above 10 mIU/mL are considered protective. Non-responders need repeat vaccination series with a confirmatory titer after completion. Time these evaluations 6 to 12 weeks before departure to allow time for vaccine course completion and titer confirmation if needed. Your travel medicine provider specifies the threshold for protection required and what revaccination strategy applies for your specific destination and itinerary.

✦

MMR, yellow fever, and other destination-specific titers

MMR titers confirm immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella before travel to regions with lower vaccination rates or during outbreaks. Some destinations and employer programs require documented MMR immunity in addition to vaccination records because vaccine records can be uncertain over decades. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into some countries and recommended for others. The yellow fever card documents vaccination, not titer. Rabies pre-exposure titer confirms adequate antibody response to the pre-exposure vaccine series. See our dedicated rabies titer blood test page for RFFIT-specific workflows. Typhoid fever, Japanese encephalitis, and meningococcal vaccines do not require routine titer monitoring after vaccination.

✦

Occupational and employer travel health titer documentation programs

International healthcare workers, development workers, researchers, journalists, and diplomatic personnel often require documented serology for employer-mandated health clearance before international assignment. These documentation requirements are binding requirements from the employer, the receiving country, or an institutional insurance program. Titers must be drawn through a lab that produces results in a format the employer's occupational health program accepts and must be routed appropriately. When booking for employer-required titer documentation, bring the employer's specific requirements and any instructions about which labs are accepted. Results typically need to be submitted to the occupational health department by a specified deadline before the international assignment begins.

What Is a Travel Titer Blood Draw?

A travel titer blood draw is a blood test that measures antibody levels to confirm immunity to specific diseases—typically before or after international travel, or to document immunity for travel health programs, employers, or visa requirements. Common travel titer tests include: • **Yellow fever titer** — required documentation for some countries; serology to confirm immunity post-vaccination • **Hepatitis A and B titers** — confirm protective antibody levels for travelers to endemic regions • **Typhoid titer** — immunity confirmation for at-risk travel • **MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) titers** — often required for travel medicine clearance or employer health programs • **Rabies titer** — for travelers working with animals or in endemic regions (see also our rabies titer page) Speedy Sticks provides at-home mobile phlebotomy for travel titer draws, with routing to the reference lab appropriate for each titer type.
